A note on our Testimonials: These are all from real people, many of whom are still students and we can introduce you to when you visit the school!
I studied under Sifu Tei in 1996 and since that time, I have gotten married and have 2 amazing boys, Nick 11 and Kris 8, who also studied with Sifu Tei. I never thought learning Kung Fu would change my life so drastically but it has. California Academy of Martial Arts is a great place to not only learn Kung Fu, but to strengthen your soul and teach your children all the important things in life like respect, focus and how to treat people in everyday life. You’ll meet a lot of great people there and make friends that you’ll have the rest of your life. It was something I needed in my life and your children will be grateful too. –Kent Niepert and Family, now living in China
We are still new to the school but I put my 4year old and 7year old in this school. The teachers are patient And very knowledgeable. They respect the children and their parents. My kids are upset that their are only six classes a week! I was not pushed or harassed to put my kids in when they went in for an introductory class. The staff are all very respectful and answered my questions (which there were many) with professionalism and with actual answers rather than “that’s just the way it is” or “that’s what our Sifu says”. My kids enjoy watching the “older” kids and adults practice and we are not asked to leave when we go in early or stay late so they can watch. They teach anti-bullying and “Stranger Danger” so the kids do not become bullies and learn how to deal with bullies in a positive manner rather than “teaching the bully a lesson” (aka fighting). They teach the kids how to get away from a stranger if they are grabbed, they are taught who to go to and who can help them, as well as many other techniques that keep them safe along with their martial art education. Very very happy parent! –Brenda R., Parent of Sean & Liam, students since 2012.
I shopped around a lot before deciding on this school. I wanted to learn the real wing chun that bruce lee learned, not some modified version of it. People here are nice, considerate and want you to learn, excel and progress. Enrollment contracts here are standard and the same contract you will get at any reputable martial arts school in Los Angeles. I am happy with my decision. –Allan W., student since 2010
I love this place. I heard about Wing Chun from a friend 15 years ago and always wanted to give it a try. I thought I was probably too old to take it up, but I decided to come in for an introductory lesson and I quickly became hooked. Even as a total beginner at martial arts, I was never overwhelmed or made to feel uncomfortable. They have a very patient and methodical approach, yet at the same time, they push you to excel. It’s amazing how much I’ve learned in 5 months. I also love that they are open 7 days a week, which makes it easy for me to come 3-4 times a week or more if possible. They have an unlimited plan so i can come as much as I want. They also have private lesson options too. They have a great community of committed teachers and students and I’ve always come away impressed by the support and respect that I see everyone give to each other there. If I had kids, I would definitely want them to go to this school, if only just to learn the social skills and respect that is taught there. Joining CAMA was one the best decisions I’ve ever made. It has become a bigger part of my life than i would have ever expected. The sense of well being, self confidence and fulfillment I get from practicing Wing Chun, I wouldn’t trade for anything. –Matt H., student since 2011
As an aging, creaky, cantankerous misanthrope who wanted to train in a martial art to defend himself from aggressive people who might be offended by my opinions, I happened upon CAMA in Burbank simply because it was close.
Fortunately, I not only discovered a martial art perfectly suited to my limited mobility, I met friendly, skilled, tolerant–and seriously badass– instructors who ignored my foibles (and utter lack of flexiblity) and quickly taught me to focus and rise above my attitudes.
Bring the kids to give them a leg up (pun intended) in the schoolyard and in life.
Wish I’d have found it sooner. — Dan K., student since 2009
You will not find a better martial arts school or sifu. Period. If you are looking to train to protect and defend yourself realistically on the street, you will not find a better style than Wing Chun or a greater school than California Academy of Martial Arts. Wing Chun was developed for anyone of any size to be able to defend themselves against anyone else of any size. You learn to deflect and redirect energy and use it against your opponent, rather than use muscle and size or hard blocks. While MMA has become very popular, it is not a martial art. It is a sport with rules. Remember, on the street, there are no rules. Wing Chun is a true martial art that will prepare you for real life situations. At California Academy of Martial Arts, you will gain confidence, self-esteem, character and get in shape, all while learning the greatest martial art.
It has been exactly 3 years to the day that I signed up for classes at California Academy of Martial Arts. I can honestly say that it has been the best decision I have made in my entire life. Before attending the school, I was overweight and unhappy, spending most of my time hanging out in front of the t.v. playing video games. I knew there was something very important missing from my life. I had been talking with a friend for awhile about martial arts. He studied a different style and through our talks, I realized I was interested in martial arts, but I needed a style and a school that would fit me. Being a huge Bruce Lee fan, I did some research and found out the style he had trained in – Wing Chun. I did a quick Google search to find any nearby Wing Chun schools and California Academy of Martial Arts came up. Little did I know that it was the finest martial arts school around and that I would be embarking on a journey that would change my life forever. I have lost a ton of weight, gotten healthy, gained confidence and made lifelong friendships. I have learned to use the knowledge I’ve gained at the school not only to protect myself, but to handle many situations in my personal life. C.A.M.A. provides not only unparalleled instruction in wing chun, but a true sense of family at the school. You will develop not only physically, but also spiritually, mentally and socially. Sifu Tei, the students and instructors are the greatest people around and I have grown so much and become a better person and martial artist because of them.
C.A.M.A. will equip you with the skills to defend yourself and provide you with a true martial arts experience. As with all things in life, you will only get out of it as much as you put in. So do yourself a favor and come to California Academy of Martial Arts and start changing your life for the better. You will not be sorry. –Chris M., student since 2010 & now a Senior Instructor
It’s never too late to do the things you always wanted to do in your life. So whatever you really want, you should go for it when you have the opportunity, before other things get in the way of it. It’s never too late. –Kevin T., student for several years along with his son Stirling.
Burbank Kung Fu School Trains Pop Star Brothers
By Tolucan Times Staff on January 26th, 2011
Kent Niepert and his sons Nicholas (11) and Kristofer (8) have studied Wing Chun Kung Fu (Bruce Lee’s style) at California Academy of Martial Arts (C.A.M.A.) for years under Chief Instructor Todd Shawn Tei.
Tei has worked with many celebrities including Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, and has choreographed extensively for TV and film. C.A.M.A. was also recently featured on George Lopez’s show Lopez Tonight.
Last year the Niepert family took a trip to China to give their talented kung fu kids a shot at a career in Asian films and music. In addition to their kung fu skills, Nicholas and Kristofer both sing and play multiple instruments, including guitar and drums. They are fluent in both Mandarin and English.
The ‘Nickris Brothers’ have since become Beijing pop stars and are gearing up for their first starring roles in a feature film. Sifu Tei will also appear in the film and choreograph its martial arts scenes.
Niepert says, “I studied Wing Chun under Sifu Tei before I met my wife. Once my kids were old enough I brought them to Sifu Tei’s school. California Academy of Martial Arts has given my kids discipline, self-confidence and focus, which has of course contributed to their recent success.”
C.A.M.A. will be celebrating their sixteenth year in Burbank this summer. Programs are available for children ages three and up as well as adults and teens, with classes held seven days a week. For more information, call (818) 843-7916 or visit www.kungfuwingchun.com.
